What is the DALL-E Watermark?
Since February 2024, OpenAI embeds C2PA (Content Credentials) metadata into all images generated by DALL-E 3 and ChatGPT. This invisible watermark contains information about the image's AI origin, including which model created it and when.
Images generated through ChatGPT contain dual provenance: a signature indicating DALL-E 3 generation plus an additional manifest showing ChatGPT as the creation interface.
How DALL-E Watermarks Work
The watermarking system includes:
- C2PA metadata — Embedded provenance information following industry standards
- CR symbol — Small visible indicator (in some versions)
- Digital signature — Cryptographic proof linking to OpenAI
This metadata can be read by platforms like Instagram and Facebook to automatically label content as AI-generated.
